These pearls are the real thing, grown in the shells of mussels or oysters. Van Den Berg pearls are all cultured i.e. farmed, but the term cultured pearls usuallly refers to the ones grown in oysters. These pearls are generally perfectly round and tend to be more expensive.

The pearls cultivated in mussels farmed in rivers and lakes are labelled 'Fresh Water Pearls', and tend to be a little irregular in shape, which only adds to their charm.

Also very appealing are mis-shapen pearls in both Cultured and Fresh Water pearls called 'Baroque Pearls'.
